Did You Know Greece:

  • Has the following nicknames: Ethniki (National), Piratiko (The Pirate Ship) and Galanolefki (Sky blue-white)
  • Nickname Piratiko refers to the win on Portugal in the 2004 Euro Cup, since the Portuguese performed early expeditions overseas in history, ‘Greece became pirates and stole the victory’
  • Is rivals with TurkeyAlbania and Macedonia
  • Was placed in the 1994 World Cup ‘group of death’ with Argentina, Bulgaria and Nigeria
  • Only played 3 matches in the 1994 World Cup, but all 23 players took part in those matches including all 3 goalkeepers!
  • Is the 4th and last country so far which played all 3 goalkeepersin a World Cup (1994)
  • Scored 0 goals in USA ’94, but 10 goals were scored against them which is 1 of the worst records in World Cup history
  • Failed in the 1994 World Cup and it is believed that 1 of the reasons is the fact that trainer Alketas Panagoulias didn’t include young players among the veterans, which were not all in their proper form
  • Encountered Nigeria and Argentina once again in their 2010 World Cup group
  • Had in 2010 the oldest coach in World Cup history: the then 71 years old Otto Rehhagel from Germany
  • Won their first World Cup match in the 2010 World Cup against Nigeria with 2-1
  • Striker Dimitris Salpingidis scored the first World Cup goal for Greece only in 2010 against Nigeria
  • Will be based in Aracaju, Sergipe during the 2014 World Cup
